Abstract
The FAS of today is one of the twin precursors and fundamental elements of the CAF of tomorrow. These CAFs will be totally computerized and integrated so that maximum productivity is assured. In general, the number of machines installed will be less than in today’s conventional factories, although they will be more comprehensive and sophisticated. The operating efficiencies of the CAF will enable small-batch production to be as economic as if large-scale production techniques were used. The number of humans involved in the CAF will be small, but they will be large in terms of implied political and social influence. They will also have to be of a high academic background and/or be extremely competent in electronics, mechanics, manufacturing, and computing techniques.
