Abstract

The two important areas of obstruction in the biliary tract are the cystic duct and anywhere in the extrahepatic biliary tree. Obstruction of the cystic duct, generally from stones, results in “biliary colic” or progresses to cholecystitis. Bile-duct obstruction from common-duct stones presents as jaundice or cholangitis or both. Neoplasms of the head of the pancreas, ampulla of Vater, or anywhere in the bile duct produce progressive jaundice, rarely with cholangitis.
