Abstract

With singular success children in every part of the world master the essentials of an extremely complicated body of information: their native spoken language. This remarkable feat of learning is attended by none of the trappings of formal education. There is no syllabus, text, classroom, or instructor. Spoken language skills are acquired almost as a by-product of the mundane activities of everyday life.
