Abstract

Maxwell electrodynamics provides a general scheme for all electromagnetic phenomena both of classical and quantum nature. In spite of its tremendous success it still suffers from some unresolved defects. Among them the most important ones are the long-standing problem of a point charge for which the standard classical theory predicts an infinite amount of energy and the need of infinite renormalization in the case of quantum electrodynamics.
