Myasthenia Gravis with Thymoma

  • Chapter
Epithelial Tumors of the Thymus

Abstract

The presence of a thymoma has been recognized as an occurrence beyond statistical probability from the earliest history of myasthenia gravis (MG). After the description by Weigert1 in 1901 of a patient with a thymoma and lymphorrages in his muscles, considered as metastases of the thymoma, an enlargement of the thymus or a thymoma was mentioned in 28% of the first 250 patients with MG, described until 19122. In large recent series of patients with MG, thymomas occurred in 9 to 16%(3a) and in 20 to 34% of series of thymectomies for MG(4–6).
