Abstract

Writers who experimented with psychoactive drugs recognized that their responses to drugs were influenced by their expectations and apprehensions, their companions, and the time and place. Baudelaire, for example, used the sedate prose of the 19th century to caution against taking hashish while depressed, sorrowful, or worried and to suggest that a favorable surrounding with music is the best setting.
