Abstract

In preceding chapters we discussed the social structure of the collaborative pretend play of young children. This play can be seen as a crowning achievement to beginnings of pretense that go back a number of years. By age 3–4 many children have acquired a smooth proficiency in setting up an in-frame theme and managing the flow of interactions. This ensures a degree of dramaturgic unity and continuity that is obviously pleasurable to the children and can occupy them for a considerable time.
