Abstract
The genome of mCMV appears to be considerably larger than those of most other herpesviruses. Mosmann and Hudson (1973) found by velocity sedimentation in neutral and alkaline sucrose gradients and by equilibrium centrifugation in cesium chloride the molecular weight of mCMV DNA to be 132 × 106. Like human CMV, it is a linear double-stranded DNA molecule consisting of about 235 kilobase pairs. Unlike human CMV, however, the genome is one long unique sequence that lacks large terminal and internal repeat regions (Ebeling et al., 1983; Mercer et al., 1983).
