Abstract
With the advent of neutron spallation sources giving high intensities in the several eV range it is worthwhile to consider the potential uses of neutron resonance scattering for condensed matter investigations since there are several dozens of resonances in this energy range among the heavy nuclei. In the table we list some of these strong scattering resonances (taken from BNL 325). There are two noteworthy features of resonant neutron scattering: the scattering amplitudes near resonance are 1–2 orders of magnitude larger than non-resonant (potential) amplitudes, and the phase of the amplitude increases from 0 to π, as one increases the energy of the incident neutron from well below the resonance to well above it.
