Abstract

In this chapter, we describe three broadly defined approaches to cognitive group therapy: (1) a structured psychoeducational approach, (2) a problem-solving approach, and (3) an experiential-affective approach. None of these approaches needs to be used exclusively or to the exclusion of the others, and they may be used in flexible combinations depending upon clients’ characteristics and the setting in which the therapist works. Regardless of approach, the focus in cognitive group therapy is upon the individual rather than upon the group or upon relationships that develop among members of the group (including the therapist).
