Abstract

Statistical properties of laser light have been studied in a number of experiments [1]. These studies have focused primarily on the measurements of photon counting distribution and two-time intensity correlations. Correlation functions of order higher than the second have not received much attention although some attempts have been made to measure the third order correlation function [2]. Higher order correlations provide new information that is not available from the measurements of lower order correlation functions for non-Gaussian fields. In this paper we wish to describe a technique that was used to measure the third and fourth order intensity correlation functions of laser light. This technique involves measurements of auto- and cross-correlation functions of a light beam and its second harmonic (SH).
