The Ecology of Caribbean Sea Anemones in Panama: Utilization of Space on a Coral Reef

  • Chapter
Coelenterate Ecology and Behavior

Abstract

Despite the predominance of scleractinian corals as the constructors and the matrix of coral reefs, there exists a high diversity of other organisms on the substratum provided by these corals. The reef structure is dynamic and areas of cleared substratum are continuously supplied by the forces of physical collapse, bioerosion, and predation; yet sufficient evidence exists (Loya 1972, Porter 1972c, Connell 1973, Grigg and Maragos 1974) to illustrate the importance of space as a limiting resource on coral reefs.
