Abstract
The past 35 years have produced a change in emphasis in psychodynamic theory, which has influenced the clinical field. Developmental theory, which focuses on the processes of progressive growth and development throughout the life cycle, has enriched and supplemented instinct and drive theory with its emphasis on psychopathology.
