Abstract
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is becoming an increasingly important tool for studying physiological, biochemical and pharmacological functions at a molecular level in living man, whether in health or in disease. More than a hundred PET groups have been established worldwide, about thirty of which are in Western Europe. From 1989 the European Community (EC), through its Medical and Health Research Programme, has sponsored a Concerted Action on ‘PET Investigations of Cellular Regeneration and Degeneration’ under the overall coordination of Dr Dominique Comar (Liège). The main aims of this Concerted Action are to foster greater contact between European PET centres, to standardise PET methodology wherever possible (and thereby, for example, to allow results from different centres to be compared or even pooled within collaborative projects) and also to educate the many newcomers to PET in state-of-the-art techniques. The Concerted Action is not wholly restricted to PET groups within EC member states. For example, the Concerted Action is also open to PET groups in other European countries participating in the COST (Cooperation on Science and Technology) programme (e.g. Sweden).
