Abstract

Deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus are known to engage in multiple-male copulations in the field. Litters conceived in the field are known to be of multiple paternity (Birdsall and Nash, 1973). In a subsidiary analysis of data from several experiments, Dewsbury and Baumgardner (1981) found evidence that females mating with more than one male may have a decreased probability of pregnancy compared to females receiving similar amounts of stimulation from one male. Three experiments were designed to verify and explore this phenomenon.
