Abstract
Radiation therapy is used as a treatment for malignant brain tumors not only in adult cases but also in children. Conventional radiotherapy is effective for certain kinds of tumor. However, irradiation of brain tumors in small children especially those less than 5 years old, is associated with marked side effects including sequelae such as mental retardation, hormonal deficiency, and bone marrow suppression which may appear up to several years after the treatment. Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is based on the nuclear reaction between boron-10 and thermal neutrons 2.3). The reaction occurs mainly in the tumor cells and the alpha particles produced from the reaction kill only the tumor cells4). Normal cells around the tumor receive little radiation effect. BNCT can therefore be considered as an intracellular internal radiation therapy and an ideal treatment for brain tumors in children 12).
