Abstract
Dental materials, that is, all the chemical items used in tooth repair or replacement, covers the broadest range of elements and compounds found in any one chemical industry. The science of dental materials is multidisciplined, requiring its practitioner to be at least knowledgeable himself while maintaining experts for detailed advice on organic, inorganic, physical, bio- and polymer chemistry and related fields of metallurgy, materials science, adhesion, and coatings technology. Not too many years ago the preparation of dental materials was empiricism at its best, with some dentists even compounding their own restorative and prosthetic requirements. Regardless of some opinions to the contrary, the science of dental materials has truly become a “science” utilizing the most sophisticated modern techniques of instrumental analysis, fracture mechanics, and abrasion theory, just to mention a few.
