Biological Control of Plant Diseases

Abstract

Fusarium wilt of carnation, incited by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. dianthi, is a major problem in the carnation industry (Garibaldi and Gullino, 1987). Management of this disease relies on the integration of different control measures such as soil disinfestation, use of partially resistant cultivars, raised bench cultivation, and fungicide application. A new, innovative control measure, widely investigated over the past 10 years, is represented by the use of antagonistic Fusarium spp., isolated from the rhizosphere of plants grown in suppressive soils (Garibaldi et al., 1990; Tramier et al., 1983).
