Abstract

Social skills are increasingly important for children. From the time they enter nursery school they are confronted with a range of social situations. A lack of social skills, which can lead for instance to shyness and aggressive behaviour, is often seen as an indicator of diverse problems later in life, such as addiction and dropping out of school. Ringrose and Nijenhuis (1986) have reviewed a large number of studies which show a correlation between the level of functioning socially as a child and adaptability in the long term. In the studies they describe, the prognosis is unfavourable for both extremely withdrawn as well as aggressive children. Thus the timely treating of a lack of social skills is something that is highly desirable.
