Abstract
Pneumocystis carinii is an important cause of pneumonia in patients with HIV and in other immunocompromised hosts. The lack of a continuous in vitro culture system has limited knowledge of taxonomy and other features of the basic biology of P. carinii. However, molecular studies conducted over the past decade have firmly placed P. carinii among the fungi [1], a finding that is reflected by the inclusion of the organism in this chapter.
