Abstract
A technique for measuring the thickness of dynamic thin oil films in a bearing simulator rig is presented. The resolution achieved is ~0.1μm over a 500μm range. An argument for the benefits of this technique over existing methods of measurement is given along with suggestions for the future direction of this work. Novel probe design and details of the signal processing procedure are discussed and results for a fixed set of running conditions of the bearing simulator rig are shown with independent validation of the system’s performance.
