Abstract

The term “antioxidant” is normally understood by polymer technologists to refer to the stabilization of rubbers and plastics against the effects of oxygen at high temperatures. Plastics technologists have adopted the term “stabilization” to describe the protection of plastics against light, and until recently, UV stabilizers for plastics were commonly believed to act by quite different mechanisms. This technological classification has tended to obscure the basic mechanisms common to the behavior of antioxidants in many polymers and under a wide range of environments.
