Abstract
When I started writing this book a little over three years ago, a bright future was clearly on the horizon for video microscopy. What I did not anticipate then was the continuing, incredible growth of video and image-processing technology, and the number of new products that would be introduced in so short a time. Integrated circuits became ever more powerful as they also shrank in size. New generations of stand-alone processors now handle megabit computations in a flash, free from large host computers.
Many (new) companies now market digital image-processing programs and hardware (Appendix IV). Table 1 on page 458 complements the list of manufacturers of image processors and systems given in Table 10-1. A comprehensive introductory text on digital image processing has appeared recently in paperback (Baxes, 1984).
