Malnutrition and Brain Development

Abstract

According to a recent report of the World Health Organization,1 an estimated 21 million babies born throughout the world in 1979 were of “low birth weight” (2500 g or less). Low birth weight is often associated with brain underdevelopment and mental subnormality.2–4 Similar observations pertain to the early postnatal period.5
