Abstract
A solution of 8.4 g (about 0.22 mole) of lithium aluminum hydride in 480 ml of ether (Note 1) was introduced into a 750-ml three-necked round-bottomed flask fitted with mercury-sealed stirrer, dropping funnel, and reflux condenser protected by a calcium chloride tube. The stirrer was started, and a solution of 28 g (0.2 mole) of methyl 5-methyl–2-furoate (see Vol. 1 of this work, p. 23), b.p. 97–98°/12 mm, in 150 ml of dry ether was added dropwise at such a rate that the ether boiled steadily.
