Abstract

The term “venous thromboembolism” (VTE) describes a spectrum of disease that includes both deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), and more precisely reflects a sequential disease process. It has been estimated that more than 5 million cases of DVT occur annually in the United States, which lead to approximately 500,000 episodes of PE and perhaps 50,000 deaths each year (1–3). VTE therefore constitutes a major health risk worldwide that deserves the attention of all clinicians. It is important for the intensivist to remember that PE is not a specific disease but merely a complication of deep venous thrombosis (DVT), which, in and of itself, is preventable (1).
