Abstract
The conservative or nonsurgical treatment of voiding dysfunction has improved significantly, due predominantly to an improved understanding of the basic neurophysiologic mechanisms regulating the function of the bladder, prostate, and urethra. An example is the recent surge in nonsurgical treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Due to the expected increase in the aging population, together with the current cost of traditional surgery, it is expected that knowledge regarding the medical treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia will rapidly advance over the next few years. As such, this chapter has been expanded to include current knowledge regarding medical treatment of this condition.
