Abstract
The nature and properties of microheterogeneous systems have been increasingly investigated in recent years. Several reasons exist for this interest: one concerns the similarity with biological systems where compartmentalization is necessary to proper functioning and microheterogeneity is a requisite for this. Other reasons are of technological nature: surfactant systems are being used in the oil industry for recovery of oil from spent wells and in research into solar energy storage, where compartmentalization is envisaged as a way in which separated charges can be prevented from undergoing energy-degrading back reactions.
