Abstract

There is no obvious way to partition by time, space, or topic a discussion of trade and exchange in California prehistory. Indeed, there is no definitive set of archaeological or ethnological criteria from which to demarcate even that region we might call “California.” We have elected to discuss the archaeological data from an area that incorporates the geographical outlines of the “California culture area” as defined by Heizer (1978), and address more tangentially parts of the western Great Basin and Mojave Desert physiographic provinces (Figure 1). Temporal periods discussed are composite units of Paleoindian and Lower Archaic periods (ca. 12,000–5000 B.P.), Middle and Upper Archaic periods (ca. 5000–1450 B.P.), and the Emergent period (ca. 1450–200 B.P.).
