Power Optimization in Operational Amplifier Design

  • Chapter
Low Power Analog CMOS for Cardiac Pacemakers

Abstract

The part of the consumption of a pacemaker that is related to the energy delivered to the heart is below one half of the total consumption. This fraction can be even much smaller depending on the stimulation requirements of the patient. A significant share of the remaining part of the consumption is devoted to the analog circuits that are active most of the time, such as the sense channel or the rate adaptation sensor. The minimization of the consumed power in these circuits is very important in this framework, where savings of even fractions of a µA are significant. This chapter discusses techniques for power optimization in the design of operational amplifiers.
