Abstract
The holistic, therapeutic milieu approach provides a conceptual as well as practical setting for meeting the complex and multifaceted remedial and therapeutic challenges encountered in postacute neuropsychological rehabilitation of the brain-injured adult. The conceptual underpinnings of the approach have been articulated by Ben-Yishay in a companion chapter in this volume (see Chapter 8). It is the aim of this chapter to describe the practical implementation of the holistic approach, as represented by the New York University Medical Center, Rusk Institute Brain Injury Day Treatment Program. It explains how the structural, programmatic, and specialized cognitive—psychotherapeutic elements, combine and reinforce one another to foster the levels of awareness, malleability, compensation, appropriateness of interpersonal behaviors, and acceptance of the consequences of the brain injury, which are essential for achieving optimal rehabilitation outcomes.
