Abstract

Two broad bands of psychological disorders have been generally accepted by the clinical community: internalizing and externalizing. Although more recently made popular by Achenbach and Edelbrock (1978,1983), the basic dichotomy has been around for quite some time: Peterson (1961) used the term personality problem versus conduct problem, and Miller (1967) used the terms inhibition versus aggression to describe the same concepts.
