Abstract
The previous three chapters summarized faunal and artifactual data from three early archaeological sites of the western Santa Barbara coast. As we will see, the variability evident in these sites appears to reflect different aspects of a broader adaptation by early maritime hunter-gatherers. The data provide a unique opportunity to examine the structure of an early Holocene coastal adaptation, as well as variation in the settlement and subsistence patterns of early Millingstone groups. In this chapter, I take a more detailed look at the variability among Santa Barbara Channel sites dating earlier than about 7,500 years ago.
