Complementary and Alternative Approaches to Biomedicine

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 546))

Abstract

Homeostasis is a fundamental process in life conducted under various stressors. Human health in a highly variable environment is dependent upon the proper balance of physiological processes. According to emerging views, homeostasis may be achieved by the coordinated activities of the three major integrative systems: the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems. The immune system has for a long time been considered as independent, but recent numerous studies have revealed it to be in a delicate state of balance with the neuro-endocrine system. In this chapter, the author reviews how this reciprocal modulation between neuro-endocrine and immune systems is maintained in relation to stress and diseases. Possible animal models for the basic study of neuro-endocrine-immune system are also presented. Lastly, there is a discussion of how: 1) the development of these animal models is important; 2) complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) could contribute to the alleviation of stress-induced diseases.
