Abstract

Konrad Gesner (1551), in one of the first widely distributed bestiaries, grouped animals that eat meat, a procedure that Linnaeus (1758) followed and identified as the order Ferae. The grouping of mammals that were carnivorous was further refined by Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire and Cuvier (1795), Cuvier (1800, 1817), Gray (1821), and Temminck (1835–41). They inferred relationships among species and groups of species primarily on the basis of morphological similarities in dentition.
