Abstract

Automated Highway Systems (AHS) have the potential for providing considerable improvements over current roadway conditions in the areas of vehicle throughput, traffic safety, user comfort, as well as numerous other areas of significance. At the present time, however, issues exist about numerous aspects of AHS deployment and operation as well as the risks involved if these issues are not resolved. AHS research and development is still at a stage that precludes the ability to completely answer such concerns now. The success of AHS, that is, the realization of its potential in all areas of importance, begins with an inquiry into and the eventual resolution of these issues and concerns.
