Abstract
In this chapter, the flow control problem for available bit rate (ABR) traffic will be described. Since ABR flow control is controversial at present, the “rate-based” approaches will be used to simply highlight issues that are pertinent. We defer to several excellent survey papers for detailed descriptions of the various flow control policies that have been proposed (see the references at the end of this chapter). Flow control is a dynamic mechanism by which excess network resources are granted to existing connections that can utilize them. ABR data connections can exploit excess bandwidth and thereby potentially generate more revenue for the ATM network transport and service providers.
