Thermomechanical Analysis of Dental Waxes in the Penetration Mode

  • Chapter
Book cover Analytical Calorimetry

Abstract

Differential thermal analysis (DTA) of commercial and dental waxes has established the presence of solid-solid as well as melting transitions1. The phase changes associated with these transition temperatures can be expected to influence the mechanical behavior of wax. Flow under load is an important property of waxes used in dentistry and is known to vary with time and temperature2,3 however, the method used in specification testing for measuring flow by loading a specimen at a constant temperature for a given interval of time does not directly indicate the relationship between flow and the phase(s) present in the wax.
