Phenomena in Fast Rotating Heavy Nuclei

  • Chapter
Advances in Nuclear Physics

Abstract

With the experimental techniques now available, nuclear states can be excited with angular momenta large enough to generate major modifications in the nuclear structure. These possibilities have opened up a whole new dimension in the study of nuclei (BM 74). During the last few years, a wealth of experimental data has been reported from which insight into the features of nuclear states at large angular momenta has been obtained. We review here the experimental knowledge of these high-spin phenomena with particular emphasis on the properties of heavy nuclei in which these phenomena can best be observed.
