Nutritional Status of Exclusively Breastfeeding Adolescents from Northwest and Central Mexico

Abstract

Breastfeeding may impair nutritional status of adolescent mothers, a vulnerable group due to their additional nutrient requirements. Data from countries with emerging economies (Geervani & Jayashree 1988; Casanueva et al. 1991) have found more weight and fat losses at three months postpartum in adolescent compared with adult lactating mothers. Mexico, a country in economic transition, presents contrasting social-cultural characteristics between northwest (NW) and central regions. There are no studies about the effect of breastfeeding on maternal nutritional status in the NW region, while this nutritional information from the central region is well known. This study evaluated the effect of breastfeeding at one and three months postpartum on the nutritional status of adolescent mothers from northwest and central Mexico.
