Placental Shape Aberrations

  • Chapter
Pathology of the Human Placenta

Abstract

In recent years, it has become practical to record and follow the location of the placenta during the course of gestation by sonography. This methodology has shown that a “dynamic placentation” occurs. That is to say, the original location of the implanting blastocyst may be modified during the course of its development to becoming a term placenta. These concepts are examined in this chapter, and the various types of abnormal placental developments are discussed. The chapter also considers the morphology of placenta accreta, percreta, and that of ectopic implantation.
