Abstract

Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) is the most virulent form of a group of tick- and mite-borne zoonotic infections known as spotted fevers and caused by various rickettsiae. RMSF has a case-fatality rate of 20% unless treated promptly with appropriate antibiotics. Early diagnosis is difficult. Young, otherwise healthy individuals occasionally die with RMSF.
