Abstract
Obesity is a major health problem that now affects over 58 million Americans (1). The most effective treatment for this disease involves the combination of diet, exercise, and behavior modification (2, 3). Most individuals who enroll in such lifestyle intervention programs will initially succeed in losing weight, but the long-term maintenance of weight loss remains difficult to achieve (2, 4). This chapter will review the recent research on lifestyle approaches to the treatment of obesity and suggest strategies that the clinician may find helpful in working with overweight individuals to achieve long-term weight loss.
