Abstract
The surgeon, when having to deal with an intraocular foreign body (F.B.), will be facing the problems related to the pathology and the surgery of perforating lesions as well as the extraction of the foreign body (2). Naturally, the problems will be dif¬ferent every time, and will mainly depend on the kind of perforating lesion, on its loca¬tion and extent, on the position of the F.B. and on its nature, shape and dimensions. Both the pre-operative period and when to proceed with surgery must be determined with extreme accuracy. During the pre-operative period, after having performed the necessary examinations, the surgeon must decide what procedure is to be followed and when to perform surgery. Even though an early operation may partly prevent inflam¬matory reactions, vitreo-retinal proliferations, and prolonged hypotonicity, it may on the other hand cause hemorrhages and choroidal detachments.
