Abstract
We propose an optimum algorithm jointly to estimate the delay and directions of arrival (DOA) channel characteristics based on the maximum likelihood (ML) criterion for the MC/CDMA system. By cyclically shifting the signature chip from one symbol to another in the acquisition period, the received signal from different users can be so processed as separately provided to the algorithm. The algorithm performs a 2-dimensional DFT on the signal sequence thus provided from the antenna elements and the subcarrier channels, first giving a statistics by which the DOA can be estimated and, by using its result, the path characteristic can be assessed. By simulation, diversity combining using the weights derived from the measurement by the proposed method is shown to greatly outperform the conventional combining.
