The MCSE Approach for System-Level Design

Abstract

This paper presents the MCSE approach for the specification and design of embedded systems. The first motivation is to demonstrate its usefulness on the case study selected for the technical panel on the comparison of four languages for system level specifications at DATE 99. The MCSE solution for the crane control system is given first with the simulation results we have obtained. The second motivation is to stimulate more discussions on what engineers really need for system design. The term “language” can be understood as the interface between designers and tools or can be considered as a computational means inside tools. We show that we are in favor of a well-formalized notation directly usable and understandable by engineers able to describe solutions for verification first, then for performance studies and finally for product generation and/or synthesis. We also raise the ambiguity that exists on the possible levels of description when we use the term system-level specification and design.
