Abstract
Pipelines provide a very important means of transporting the fuels that make civilization prosperous. Pipelines are relatively safe and an efficient means to ship gas and liquid petroleum products. Dey, et al. (1998) stated that pipelines have failure rates much lower than railroads or highway transportation, although failures do occur. In 1993, 51 people were burnt to death when escaping gas from a pipeline ignited. In 1994, a pipeline in New Jersey (USA) failed, killing one and injuring over fifty other people. Pipeline failures have occurred around the world. These failures rarely result in fatalities, but lead to heavy business losses, and cause considerable damage to the environment.
