Abstract
In July 1998, the British Medical Journal published a systematic review about the effect on mortality of human albumin and plasma protein fraction (PPF) administration in the management of critically ill patients [1]. The same review was published 2 weeks earlier in the Cochrane Library. It concerned the results of about 30 randomised controlled trials comparing albumin/PPF with no albumin/PPF, or with a crystalloid solution, in critically ill patients with hypovolemia, burns, or hypoalbuminaemia.
