Abstract

Statistical ecology involves a quantitative approach to collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data. Central to this approach is the assumption that a random sample can be taken from the ecosystem of interest. This random sample may be used to draw inference about the shape of the population distribution or about characteristics of that distribution. Unfortunately, the population distribution is not the same under all circumstances. Various probability distributions have been found useful in describing these population distributions. These distributions, their properties, and common applications are the focus of this chapter.
