Abstract

Over 1.5 million elderly Americans reside in approximately 19,000 nursing homes.1 The continued growth of the frail elderly population, the increased participation of women in the workforce who would otherwise help provide care in the home, the reduction in hospital lengths of stay with discharge of patients needing ongoing “subacute” care, and the continued lack of coordinated and affordable alternatives to nursing home care in many areas of the country all contribute to the growing need for nursing home care.
